Construction is under way on our facility expansion! With more than $1.9 million raised, the Food Bank is within $55,000 of our $2 million Capital Campaign goal. This Capital Campaign will add nearly 24,000 sq ft of badly needed space to our existing facility, including three new shipping and receiving docks, a 90,000 cu. ft. freezer and cooler to support our distribution of fresh and healthy product, and a Volunteer Service Center.
Nearly $40,000 of the remaining needed is eligible for a matching grant thanks to the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. This generous grant will match every $1 donated with $2 from the Foundation.
The new addition lays the foundation for service increases that will ensure we are better able to serve the more than 330,000 impoverished individuals living in 35 of Alabama’s 67 counties who turn to MAFB and our network of community-based Partner Agencies for assistance.
With construction moving rapidly, we anticipate that the new facility addition will be up and running in early 2014.
It’s easy to spend all our time shopping this holiday season. I spent hours on Cyber Monday pouring over Amazon, trying to find the best gifts for my family (incidentally, I used Amazon Smile to make a donation to MAFB while shopping). It’s important, I think, to spoil those around us from time to time.
But don’t be fooled – there’s a big difference between holiday gifting and holiday giving.
Giving is about much more than just checking an item off of your list and moving on. No matter if you are giving time, resources, or things, there’s much more meaning behind real and true giving.
When giving, there’s always real spirit behind the action. Think about it – gifts are always much more meaningful when they have, for example, a story behind them. Giving of yourself through volunteerism is always more powerful when you’re involved because you have a passion for the mission.
In short, real giving is emotional and tends to elicit as much joy in you as it does in the person you are giving to.
This season, I would encourage you to make sure that you’re not just gifting and moving on. Spend some time giving of yourself, putting thought into your actions, and showing those around you that you really care. Let’s get back to the Season of Giving!
What is #GivingTuesday?
First, there was Black Friday. Then came Cyber Monday, an online phenomenon for even more savings! So what are we saving with Giving Tuesday?
#Giving Tuesday is an opportunity to give back, whether it be to your local food bank, posting a status that supports hunger relief, or supporting an online fundraiser. It was created to showcase the giving power of the people and its' successes have escalated every year. The integration of corporate and celebrity sponsorships and social media have turned #GivingTuesday from a "What is that?" to a "Where do I sign up!?"
Although we would like to think that every day is a day to give, #GivingTuesday has brought a 'National Day of Giving' to the forefront and made charity a REASON to give.
For MAFB, this is a way to promote non-profits and other charities, no matter the mission, and continue to help those in need, no matter where they may be. It is also a way to 'mobilize and educate the community' by participating and promoting this wonderful event!
Instead of seeking out savings in your wallet, seek out ways to save Alabamians in need- donate your extra time, raise awareness, or make a monetary donation. It is through the support and power of the community that we can reach out to those who hunger among us.
Be sure to follow the #GivingTuesday activity on Twitter to see what others are doing to help and follow your local food bank @FeedingHopeAL. Or join our Fundraising Team on CrowdRise, for an opportunity to give BIG with help from Kevin Bacon.
As always, thank you for your support of the Montgomery Area Food Bank and helping us on our mission to 'Feed Hope Across Alabama'.
